The Role

The Database Administrator is responsible for ensuring the continued availability and performance of SQL databases within the organisation.  This comprises both internal-use and client-facing databases.

In addition, the Database Administrator will play an integral role in supporting, collaborating and providing input into Architecture, DevOps, and Development teams regarding suggested product improvements with regard to database queries, technology selection and strategy.  The role will also provide consultancy services for database related technologies for projects and ongoing product development.

Duties include:

  • Monitors and manage database query plans & indexes, performance of databases and performs investigations into fixes for performance issues
  • Provides database performance analysis and reports, and provides recommendations to architecture and development teams to improve application responsiveness
  • Writes SQL queries to resolve issues or make improvements for client and development tickets and projects
  • Performs load and performance tests against databases and investigates identified inefficiencies
  • Designs databases to meet business requirements and delivery of database projects
  • Works with the Architecture and DevOps teams to design and architect scalable, resilient, and secure database solutions in Azure
  • Participate in technical discussion with existing & potential clients and internal teams
  • Assists the development team with database schema changes between releases
  • Investigates and rectifies data integrity issues
  • Manages database scaling and backups to maintain high availability
  • Assist in the design, implementation and management of Disaster Recovery processes for databases
  • Manages and audits access to databases
  • Manages the capacity of existing database components, and provides growth predictions based on historical and predicted data
  • Designs, implements and manages archival of historical client data in databases to reduce size and improve performance

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have broad experience in designing, implementing and managing database systems in a cloud environment. You will be highly efficient in writing SQL scripts for Microsoft SQL database.

You will have advanced experience in troubleshooting database performance issues such as poor performing queries, query plans and optimizing table indexes. You will have strong experience in designing & implementing database Disaster Recovery and high availability processes.

You will also have experience with designing and implementing database systems in line with security standards such as ISO 27001, Australian ISM, GDPR, and ITIL.

You will have well-developed communication skills with the ability to connect with both technical and non-technical team members and clients.

You will be required to work on client systems that are protected by state and/or federal security mechanisms. The individual must hold, or be willing/able to obtain, relevant security clearances as required.
