Jim Tognolini
Professor and Director of the Centre for Educational Measurement and Assessment, University of Sydney
Professor Jim Tognolini is Professor and Director of the Centre for Educational Measurement and Assessment at the University of Sydney, and Managing Director of JT Educational Consulting Pty Ltd. He has held senior leadership roles across major educational organisations, nationally and internationally.
From 2006 to 2016, he served as Senior Vice President (Research and Assessment) at Pearson, and in the final two years of that appointment he was the Distinguished Research Scientist for the Pearson Assessment Centre (PAC). In his current role at the University of Sydney, he is responsible for establishing CEMA to strengthen research, policy engagement, and capacity‑building in the field.
Prior to joining Pearson, Jim was Research Director (System and School Testing) at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) from 2002 to 2006. He has extensive experience working with government agencies and educational organisations in Australia and internationally on assessment, standards, and the use of measurement information for system‑level planning, monitoring of standards, and improving teaching and learning at the school level.
Jim has delivered numerous keynote addresses and seminars in countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, India, Jordan, New Zealand, Oman, South Africa, Indonesia, China, and Thailand. From 2009 to 2013, he was in residence each year as a Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Educational Assessment.
He has been responsible for establishing several major assessment centres, including:
- The Educational Testing Centre, University of New South Wales
- The Oxford University Centre for Educational Assessment
- The Pearson Psychometric Laboratory, University of Western Australia
- The Centre for Assessment, Evaluation and Research (CAER), Government of India
- The Centre for Educational Testing, Measurement and Evaluation (CETME), Government of the United Arab Emirates
Jim has also played a significant role in state‑level assessment governance. He is a former Chair and continuing member of the NESA HSC Consultative Committee, a member of the NESA Assessment Committee, and a member of its Technical Advisory Committee.
