Janison partners with NFER to support Scotland’s national assessment programme
Janison’s digital assessment technology will underpin the delivery of Scotland’s national standardised assessments in English and Gaelic.
Janison has been appointed as the principal technology subcontractor to the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) in connection with NFER’s award of the Scottish Government contract to deliver Scotland’s national standardised assessment programme.
The programme includes the Scottish National Standardised Assessments (SNSA) and their Gaelic-medium equivalent, Measaidhean Coitcheann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig (MCNG).
Delivered annually across four key school stages, the SNSA and MCNG provide teachers with diagnostic assessment data to help them understand learner progress and plan appropriate next steps.
As NFER’s principal technology subcontractor, Janison will provide the core digital assessment platform supporting the programme, with go-live targeted for August 2027.
Supporting inclusive assessment at a national scale
The SNSA and MCNG are online, adaptive assessments designed to support learning and teaching across Scotland. They are delivered in both English and Gaelic.
Janison’s platform will provide the secure, scalable and bilingual technology required to deliver the assessments nationally.
The programme will build on Janison’s extensive experience supporting large-scale government assessment initiatives, including NAPLAN in Australia and the Assessment and Aromatawai Tool, known as SMART, in New Zealand.
Janison’s established bilingual delivery capability will also support the distinct requirements of the SNSA and MCNG and help provide a consistent, accessible experience for Scottish schools, teachers and learners.
A significant milestone for Janison in the United Kingdom
The appointment represents Janison’s first national government assessment programme in the United Kingdom and an important milestone in the company’s continued international growth.
It also strengthens Janison’s partnership with NFER, the UK’s leading independent provider of educational research and assessment, which has more than 75 years of experience delivering assessments and research.
Janison CEO Sujata Stead said the partnership reflected the company’s growing international reputation for delivering trusted assessment technology at scale.
“This is a landmark moment for Janison. Being selected to deliver Scotland’s national assessment programme – our first entry into the UK government assessment market – is a powerful endorsement of our platform, our people, and the strength of our partnership with NFER.
“It marks clear progress against our strategy to grow market share across ANZ and the UK, with partnerships a core pathway to growth. Having extended our proven national-scale delivery from Australia to New Zealand for the first time this year, and now to Scotland, we are proud to bring that experience to Scottish learners and educators.”
Janison’s subcontract with NFER commenced on 21 August 2026 and has an initial term through to October 2030. It has a total value to Janison of approximately A$14.2 million over the initial four-year term, with three potential one-year extensions associated with the Scottish Government contract.
Through this partnership, Janison will bring together its national-scale assessment experience, adaptive technology and bilingual delivery capability to support NFER in delivering a reliable and effective assessment experience for schools across Scotland.
