Since then, our assessment platform has grown into one of the most reliable end-to-end technologies for delivering large-scale tests.

What is Janison’s experience in large-scale national assessments?

Janison has extensive experience in large-scale national assessments. Since 2018, Janison’s assessment technology and exam delivery support has been trusted by Education Services Australia to deliver the country’s largest exam event: NAPLAN. We’ve delivered around 4.3 million tests in a single week for NAPLAN, with 315,000 students taking the tests at once.

We also manage and deliver ICAS – a prestigious academic competition taken by over 100,000 students across ANZ and other countries. The tests are created by our assessment experts and run through our delivery platform, with up to tens of thousands of students sitting them simultaneously.

This is in addition to helping deliver large-scale national assessments for the OECD (PISA-based Test for Schools), the British Council, the NSW Department of Education, and many more.

How does Janison ensure fairness and equity in assessments?

For assessments delivered through Janison’s technology, it ensures fairness and equity in the following ways and more:

  • Strict user access: Staff members are given unique logins and can only access areas of the assessment platform they need to – including item banks and the entire authoring system.
  • Rigorous marking features: Our marking system includes quality controls like standardisation, double marking and blind quality monitoring.
  • Locked-down tests: Students cannot access websites, AI or other apps while completing their tests.
  • Test branching and randomisation: Provide different branches and questions for test-takers to make them harder to predict and replicate.
  • Plagiarism detection: Automatically detect instances of plagiarism and flag for review.
  • Accessibility features: Extensive test accessibility features that include colour changes, zooming, screen reader support and more, ensuring that every student can complete their tests equitably.
  • Powerful AI monitoring: Remotely-proctored tests are supported by cutting-edge AI monitoring, with possible misconduct automatically flagged for later review.
What evidence is there that Janison’s solutions improve outcomes?

Here is a selection of real-world evidence that Janison’s assessment solutions help to improve outcomes for students:

  • The NSW Check-in Assessment: Schools that participated in this assessment program reported a quick turnaround for results, diagnostic information at syllabus and learning progression level, and an ability to use the results to inform their classroom practice. The Check-in assessment was also praised by the Grattan Institute as offering the best post-COVID schools dataset.
  • Offline test delivery: Our “low and no bandwidth” test delivery application continues to run tests during internet dropouts, giving students an uninterrupted, distraction-free experience no matter their connectivity. This is particularly valuable for students in remote and regional areas, where internet connectivity is unreliable.
  • Speed and efficiency: Once set up, our assessment platform allows schools to create and run exams in as little as 30 minutes, and mark and deliver results within 24 hours. This rapid feedback loop means:
    • Teachers can adjust instruction immediately rather than waiting weeks.
    • Students receive timely feedback while topics are still fresh.
    • Schools can implement interventions before students fall further behind.
  • Patrick’s College: Principal of St. Patrick’s College Vittoria Lavorato says the following about one of Janison’s AAS school assessment products, PSAM: “PSAM helps us understand where to focus our efforts. If there’s a challenge in a subject, we work closely with teachers to determine what needs attention. It’s a valuable resource for making informed leadership and instructional decisions. I wouldn’t run a school without it.”
  • Oakleigh South Primary School: Year 3 team leader Nigel Hooley uses ICAS results to inform learning and teaching programs at their school, with team leaders assessing results to discover enrichment opportunities for higher-ability students.
How does Janison innovate in digital assessment?

Janison has a long history of innovation in digital assessment, including:

  • AI assessment tool, Jai: Our new AI assessment tool allows organisations to accelerate their authoring workflow (up to 70% faster) while maintaining rigorous academic standards. The Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand are the inaugural commercial customer for Jai, with CA ANZ stating their strategic ambition is to use AI to enhance their world-leading educational program in a way that is ethical, responsible and empowering.
  • Award-winning offline test delivery: Our adaptation of progressive web app technology, originally developed by Google, allows test-takers to complete their online tests despite there being no internet connectivity. The test delivery application (originally called Janison Replay) helped position us in the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Most Innovative Companies in 2018, as well as the public sector category of the 2018 iAwards.
  • Early cloud infrastructure pioneer: We pioneered an innovative approach to large-scale assessment by using Microsoft’s then newly-released cloud service, Azure, to address scalability, delivery and security challenges of running NSW science exams in the late 2000s. We were among the first education technology companies globally to leverage cloud infrastructure for high-stakes assessment at scale.
  • Record-breaking concurrency: In May 2018, 99.9% of 668,529 individual NAPLAN tests were completed successfully online through our platform, with no slowdowns, earning international attention and acclaim. In May 2024, our platform had over 4 million tests completed, with more than 300,000 students tested concurrently.
  • British Council: The British Council successfully delivered Aptis on our test delivery application to more than 115,000 candidates in 78 countries, from India to Colombia, the Philippines and the UAE. The technology enabled testing in locations with poor or no internet connectivity, removing barriers for populations in highly remote or developing countries.
Does Janison support both online and paper-based exams?

Yes – we provide online exams through our bespoke assessment technology, and provide (or support) paper exams in the following ways:

Unfortunately, while our online assessment platform supports functionality like test printing, we can’t deliver paper-based assessments through the system as it’s designed for online.
